Lily-of-the-Valley Reviews

We had a fantastic time staying at Lily of the Valley! The place is gorgeous and impeccably maintained. I would absolutely recommend this home to any couple looking to get away and relax for a long weekend.

Recharging the Soul in West Shokan

Julianne and I searched for a home to rent in the Catskills with the idea that our dog could have a pond to swim in. We did not find anything suitable on AIRbnb and turned to HomeAway. We are happy we did. Even though our dog did not swim in the pond (we could not find a graduated beachhead entry point for him – he is an old pooch) we were delighted by the romantic and bucolic setting of the Lily in the Valley. The entire Witten Pond compound is an oasis in the woods. Set between two mountains, we savored our evenings on the porch, watching the stars on the darkest nights and later in the week, basking in the silver glow of the Harvest Moon. The 2nd floor bedroom was a special treat. With its loft-like ceilings, extra large skylights and windows, we fell asleep to the soothing sounds of the forest. Unlike many houses for rent on these rental sites, this home has character and old charm. It is furnished with an eye for detail. The old-school claw foot tub in the bathroom served as a perfect bath at the of the day. Be warned there is no stand-up shower. I was worried about this before arriving, but the accommodations of the bathroom quickly erased any misgivings. Taking a bath with moonlight lighting the room is a treat I do not get at home.

The couch downstairs opens up into sleeper bed if you have more than two people staying. For a couple this home is just about perfect. Julianne and I will be back.

Magical, Enchanting and Perfect

This property was perfect for our 40th together. The listing understated the beauty and magic of the property. Meticulously maintained inside and out with wonderful landscaping everywhere one looks. The whole management team was most attentive and made our stay special from behind the scenes. So just the perfect retreat for a couple, embraced by the magic of the property. I have and will recommend this property to others with pleasure. Everything was more than perfect. Attractions all around, but it is hard to leave the magic of Witten Pond and a joy to return. Unqualified Five Stars

Precious, Magical Place!

Our stay was relaxing and wonderful. We were lucky to see a black bear and woodchuck a couple of times. But the Peekamoose blue hole, so very close to the house, is just gorgeous. We were there twice and swam in the refreshing water both times. We also read some of the many books lying all over the house. This is a really precious, magical place!

Peyton’s Disneyland!

We truly enjoyed the Lily Of the Valley. We were looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and just relax… and also a place with water for our dog Peyton. Our dog LOVES water!!! Well this place was like his Disneyland. He would jump in the pond with no problem then run around grounds just sniffing. Arthur was in the barn next to us and he didn’t mind Peyton running around at all. Peyton went right up to him and gave him kisses! During the days when we weren’t enjoying watching our boy love the country so much we took a couple of short drives. Went to Peekamoose Pool (Saw another guest wrote about it and checked it out!) and enjoyed the sun and of course Peyton loved the water. It was a little chilly for me but plenty of people were jumping and swimming. Also took a drive to Woodstock and had delicious cupcakes! Every night we had drinks out back while cooking on the grill. You don’t ever really need to leave this place! At night it was cool enough to sleep with the windows open and — WOW — how relaxing, just the sounds of nature and never heard a car once!! We really can’t wait to go back! Wonderful home and hosts!!!

Beautiful and Relaxing

Lily of the Valley was exactly as advertised and more. My family, including our german shepherd pup, absolutely loved it. Lily is off the beaten path, and an extremely relaxing place to stay, while still a close drive (20-30 mins max) to many attractions. Booking our trip was simple and we couldn’t ask for more welcoming hosts. We look forward to returning!

Heaven on Earth

The pictures undervalue this property. It is twice as beautiful than portrayed and exceeded our expectations completely. I will say that this is the perfect place for a retreat into nature, filled with beauty and tranquility. Love, love, love it!!!!

Peaceful and Relaxing

My husband and I spent a wonderful week at Lily of the Valley. It is perfect for a couple: cozy and comfortably rustic, private, very clean and well stocked with kitchen utensils, towels, etc. There are several nice places to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. You can see the other two houses on the property, but it doesn’t distract from the feeling of privacy.

There is a good grocery store, liquor store and bakery an easy 15 minute drive away.

Tranquility, Charm and Comfort

What a find! the reviews were right on. The perfect place for a weekend escape that we wished we had booked for much longer. Nestled in the foothills on the edge on the Catskill Park lands a refuge where the history of souls seeking solitude is evident in the grounds, garden, waters, and living quarters.

We stayed in “the Lily” but toured the other buildings where we could have easily felt at home as well. My husband flyfished the catch and release pond with ease and luck while I watched and read. Super wireless internet extended from the house to the grounds and served up Netflix as a great source for evening flicks. There is no real reason to leave the grounds if you pack food to prepare meals. We explored Boiceville, Woodstock, and Phoenicia as it was Woodstock Anniversary weekend and we hadn’t been up there since our youth in the seventies.

We had dinner one night at the “Peekamoose Restaurant” in Big Indian but we did not find it as impressive as the reviews touted. We did enjoy sandwiches prepared at “Bread Alone” bakery outlet in Boiceville, we actually stopped in there for take out on the ride home too. Besides great local fishing spots there are plenty of easy hiking trips. We learned of the “Peekamouse Blue Hole” very close to Witten Pond. It was a scenic ride, a short hike, and an amazing place. We saw why this site is rated one of the top five swimming holes in the USA.

It looked like a tropical pool. We did not swim as the air temp was 65 but there were some hikers and their pups swimming there.

The owner and caretaker of Witten Pond, Arthur, was in residence at the time and he was helpful, thoughtful and delighted that we appreciated his piece of paradise. The photographs of this place just begin to tell the story of peace at the end of Moonhaw Road.

Idyllic Hideaway

I’m always a little nervous arriving at a rental that I’ve found online and never seen but Lilly of the Valley was even better than the pictures. Nestled above the pond, far enough back from the road but within earshot of the brook, is a gorgeous little house fit for all seasons. I can imagine enjoying sitting by the fire as much as I did watching the fire flies from the porch.

Beautiful Getaway from the City

We have rented many homes for short getaways in the Catskills over the last three years and Lily of the Valley is by far the best.

Among the many factors making Lily of the Valley so great are: its secluded and very quiet location in the heart of the Catskills but still within easy driving distance of NYC, the beautiful spring fed-fed Witten pond that is the centerpiece of the property, the claw foot bath tub that allows you to relax while enjoying the view of Witten pond, its Tuscan grill, and its light-filled second floor bedroom.

The property is very clean and well-maintained and its close to the two most important things you need in the Catskills: easy access to hiking trails and excellent farm stands. Arthur, the owner, takes great pride in his property, which is evident in every detail you encounter on your stay. We would certainly recommend this property to anyone else who is looking to have a unique and enjoyable getaway in the Catskills.
